Business Management School, Ormskirk
Client: Edge Hill University
This new two and three storey building provides education and administrative accommodation including a 120-seat lecture theatre, teaching areas and staff offices serviced by generous break-out and circulation areas.
The building was of steel framed construction with insitu concrete floors and the elevations were a combination of masonry panels and specialist curtain walling elements.
The provision of cellular social learning areas for use by groups or individuals was designed around an open space allowing natural light into the large elliptical central atrium.
The building, completed on an occupied campus, has a high class finish and feel including interactive teaching aids, ground floor tiling and seamless glass balustrade giving a more open aspect to the stairs and bridge decks with extensive brise soleil to the glazed facade of the building.
Access to the large roof garden from a second storey internal bridge was built over the first floor teaching areas incorporating fully glazed roof top meeting facilities.
The mechanical and electrical installation was to a high specification and the heat source includes energy provided by ground source heat pumps. Natural ventilation throughout the building is combined with high levels of insulation with the heating linked to a solar hot water system and a combined heat and power unit.
