Northern Logistics Academy, St Helens
Client: St Helens College
The Northern Logistics Academy for St Helens College creates a specialist transport and logistics training facility to inspire students to gain the skills that employers are looking for.
Refurbishment and reconfiguration works converted an existing skills and training building, at St Helen’s College occupied campus, into a new facility to deliver sector training and qualifications, help bridge skills gaps and provide new talent for the future.
Creation of a warehouse environment within the main workshop area of the building includes racked shelving and a forklift truck operative training zone. A new reception area, teaching/IT rooms and office space were formed along with the reinstatement of a refectory allowing the campus to be self-sufficient. New mechanical and electrical services were upgraded throughout the building.
Offering students a realistic work setting, the Northern Logistics Academy, provides training about product movement, from the initial receipt of goods through to storage, picking, packing and despatch as well as forklift truck and HGV operations. An elevated viewing gallery will allow students to observe a working warehouse in action.
Working with local employers, the one stop shop for transport, distribution and supply chain management will prepare young people for a vocation in the expanding logistics sector along with higher and professional training for those wishing to further their chosen career path.
Investment has seen the development of a brand new standalone distribution and warehouse environment. The training centre is equipped with IT rich data processing centres with logistics software suites and dedicated transport simulators, providing a realistic student training facility.
The new Northern Logistics Academy in St Helens has received support from key employers in the sector including Asda, Eddie Stobart, Bibby Distribution, Matalan and many more along with backing from both industry and membership bodies; the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT).
