LIVERPOOL HOPE UNIVERSITY
John Turner Construction has recently completed the transformative i3 Building at Liverpool Hope University, a project focused on enhancing the student experience and promoting sustainability. This modern addition to the Hope Park Campus replaces the 1960s media wing while retaining elements of the original lecture theatre complex. The new two-story extension seamlessly integrates into the existing campus, creating a dynamic environment tailored to student needs.
Central to the building’s design is a ‘library without books’ concept, organised around a vibrant social core. The architectural layout features a mix of triple, double, and single-height spaces, creating a bright and welcoming atmosphere that encourages collaboration and creativity. A top-lit, triple-height space floods the interior with natural light, enhancing the building’s energy efficiency and promoting interaction across all levels.
The i3 Building is equipped with advanced technologies, including a state-of-the-art Virtual Reality (VR) facility and a Simulation Lab on the first floor. These resources provide immersive, hands-on learning opportunities for students across various disciplines. Additionally, the building features an innovative staircase that also serves as seating, with bespoke Oak treads crafted by our in-house joinery division. This design provides informal spaces for students to gather and collaborate.
Flexibility is a key aspect of the design, with a variety of work and study areas catering to different levels of privacy and collaboration. The adaptable layout supports the evolving nature of technology and educational practices.
Sustainability is at the forefront of the i3 Building’s design, incorporating renewable energy sources like air source heat pumps and rooftop solar panels. The naturally ventilated atrium, along with integrated low-carbon technologies, ensures long-term sustainability and low operating costs.
The i3 Building not only enhances the university’s educational resources but also serves as a hub for social learning, fostering a strong sense of community among students.
