Advanced Technology Centre

Blackpool & The Fylde College

The Advanced Technology Centre (ATC) comprised the design and build of a new two storey teaching facility, on an occupied campus, accommodating ground floor technical spaces to train the next generation of highly skilled workers in the advanced engineering, automotive and manufacturing sectors.

Incorporating specific and complex facilities, the new ATC was constructed utilising a steel frame on a standard pad foundation solution, in-situ slab to the ground and first floor along with specialist extract systems, radiant panels and high bay lighting. The building provides:

  • automotive workshops designed to market leader standards
  • engineering workshops including CNC technology
  • a project zone featuring pneumatics, robotics and electronics with a CAD studio
  • research and development centre including engine test cells, rolling road and spray booths
  • materials and paint applications workshop
  • second floor traditional classrooms

The striking ATC secured a building excellence award and was highly commended as one of the best building projects by the region’s Local Authority Building Control. Along with receiving a Blackpool Civic Trust award, the new engineering facility also achieved an Excellent BREEAM rating, excellent Considerate Constructor scores as well as Performance Beyond Compliance.

Scott Dennett, a construction management student from the College worked with the John Turner site project team, on a weekly basis, gaining knowledge and experience to help with his studies.

During the 73 week construction period, organised site visits were carried out with students from the College. Site management donated building samples and product literature to construction and craft students which formed part of their assessment projects.

Sustainable features included natural light and glare control; zoned lighting with sensor and time controlled elements; underfloor heating; sub-metered water in areas using >10% of overall consumption; increase in ecological value from planting initiatives and SUD’s drainage system.
