John Turner was awarded the design and build of a bespoke steel frame supermarket shell including service yard, access road modifications, extensive car park, landscaping and footpaths. The works also included forming back of house areas, storage space, plant rooms and w/c facilities for staff and customers.
The supermarket shell was constructed on a brownfield site where redundant buildings were demolished and pile foundations were required due to the poor bearing capacity of the ground. An insulated insitu ground slab with pile caps and ground beams completed the foundations. Service ducts and refrigeration trenches were cast into the foundations with access points for maintenance and ease of installation.
A mezzanine floor, serviced by two lifts for goods and pedestrians, was constructed and the lift shafts were built in structural blockwork. The internal skin of the external envelope and partitions were also constructed in fair face blockwork.
The building facade utilised locally sourced stone and slate satisfying the responsible sourcing of materials category. Other envelope treatments included metal composite cladding, render and aluminium powder coated windows, curtain walling and supermarket entrance.
The existing hard landscaped areas and car parking were remodelled with retaining walls and a paved, soft landscaped and illuminated pedestrian link was formed.
A new concrete service yard was created to the rear of the structure and screened with acoustic panels and walls to contain traffic noise, giving privacy and security to the retailer.
A Considerate Constructors score of 33 was awarded gaining further BREEAM credits. The project achieved a high level of recycling and the collated data from our supply chain partner confirmed 97.58% was attained.
