Engineering Two Building

Lancaster University

Lancaster University appointed John Turner Construction as the Principal Contractor for the new Engineering Two construction project. Our established relationship with the University, stemming from the successful completion of the Management School West Pavilion and the Library Extension projects, brought valuable experience to this design and build scheme.

Prominently situated adjacent to the existing Engineering building, the new three-storey facility features a brick façade inspired by Lancashire’s local industry and heritage, with purpose-made adjustable lintels fabricated to form several large feature arches. The steel frame building stands on piled foundations on the site of the former sports hall and swimming pool.

Engineering Two, spans 2900 m2 and encompasses three floors of teaching spaces, creating a world-class engineering environment on the university campus. Its ground floor houses a research-rig hall, an electron microscope suite with a dedicated material preparation laboratory and various specialised laboratories for chemical, hydrogen and bioengineering studies. Additionally, it includes a flexible engineering design laboratory and an 80-seat 3D lecture theatre with retractable seating. The building is fully accessible, incorporating hearing loops, adjustable furniture layouts and accessible toilet facilities, all accessible by lift.

The site, bound by a netball court, pathways and adjacent buildings, required meticulous planning. Collaborating closely with the University, John Turner Construction developed robust logistics, access, delivery, noise control, and site management plans to ensure safety and minimise disruption throughout the construction process.
