Maplewood 2

Calderstones Partnership NHS Foundation Trust

Maplewood 2 involved the new build of a 32 bed low secure unit at Calderstones Hospital in the village of Whalley near Clitheroe offering modern facilities and services to people with learning and associated disabilities including assessment and treatment.

The new state-of-the-art unit represents the latest in equipment and technology improving living and working conditions for patients and staff. The building was completed on an occupied mental health site incorporating:

  • reception area
  • two staff bases
  • office and administration spaces
  • five laundries
  • four clinics
  • stores
  • cleaning facilities
  • day facilities including lounges, activity rooms and meeting rooms
  • two seclusion suites.

Maplewood 2 is residential in character and is constructed using traditional methods including cavity wall face brickwork, timber trussed rafters and tiled roof.

John Turner’s in-house joinery workshop manufactured and fitted bespoke glazed screens in the en-suite bedrooms and throughout the building.

The sustainable 33,000 sq ft building achieved an environmental performance rating of Excellent for BREEAM. The unit comprises low carbon initiatives including integrated solar photovoltaic panels, a surface water attenuation system, a ground source heat pump, a CHP unit and especially high levels of thermal insulation.

A number of secure gardens provide a safe and relaxing environment for the service users. In addition, the large kitchen facility allows a shift in the Trust’s catering strategy where meals for all the premises are centralised and delivered from Maplewood 2.

The security of the site, the avoidance of disruption to the existing hospital and the safety of existing staff, patients and visitors were of high importance.

The project included the installation of a new 3.5m security fence which also encompasses an existing occupied low secure building known as Maplewood 1, a 20 bed behavioural facility split into four wings, which John Turner constructed previously.
