Expansion of SPAR Distribution Centre

John Turner Construction has started on site with an extension of the SPAR Distribution Centre at Bowland View, Preston for James Hall & Co Ltd.

Construction works for Phase 1 comprise a 3328m2 extension of the existing Goods Received/Returns warehouse over a 44 week programme duration. The 9m high single storey building will include 12 loading bays with dock levellers, racking and a new canopy.

A glazed two storey office tower will overlook the external hard standing providing additional space for up to 24 trucks to load/unload. Installation of a Syphonic drainage system and underground attenuation tank will help control the flow of surface water from the building and external areas into the surrounding swales and wetlands.

James Hall & Co. Ltd. is a Lancashire-based family business which was founded in Southport in 1863. Currently one of the county’s largest employers with more than 800 staff, they are now a wholesaler and distributor for SPAR, serving over 600 stores in the North of England.

SPAR is the world’s largest international food retail chain with over 12,000 stores in 42 countries meeting the needs of over 13 million consumers every day. SPAR was founded in Holland in 1932 and was introduced to the UK in 1956. The business employs over 50,000 people and services more than 2,400 UK stores.
