Creative Edge Building, Ormskirk

The shell construction and fit out of the innovative Creative Edge Building was completed on an occupied and busy campus providing a hub of industry standard high-spec suites and teaching facilities.
Spanning over three storeys, the modern design also offers central circulation spaces, offices, social areas, feature staircase and a lift with an underground plant room.
With facilities on a par with those used by the BBC at MediaCityUK, Creative Edge incorporates television and recording studios; sound editing suites; radio and photographic studios; a 250 seat lecture theatre and multimedia, computer, networking and forensics laboratories.
The building was constructed with CFA piled foundations, steel frame with metal deck and insitu concrete floors. The walls were constructed from a combination of insulated carrier panels which were over clad with zinc rainscreen cladding and curtain walling. The roof construction consisted of glulam beams and steel purlins covered with a standing seam kalzip finish.
A roof top garden was created with break out spaces and viewing points incorporating a brown roof to increase biodiversity and provide a natural means of rain water attenuation.
Energy efficient lighting solutions were installed including LED sources for studio lighting resulting in approximately 30% reduction in energy usage. Solar PV panels provide daytime electricity when demand is highest. High performing solar control glass reduces solar transmittance by approximately 70% whilst still maintaining high level appropriate daylight factors.
Heat generated from media equipment is collected, recovered and reused throughout the Creative Edge and adjacent buildings. This water cooled heat pump system allows redeployment of heat and energy across the building saving approximately 40,000 tonnes of carbon needing to be generated from fossil fuels.
A large lake was constructed which the Creative Edge building overlooks and provides a central feature for the surrounding student accommodation blocks. Other external works included hard and soft landscaping, SUDS surface water drainage and external services infrastructure.
This project, designed to BREEAM Excellent, was successfully completed achieving the fast track 28 week programme.
