A new two storey Sports Centre was completed on an occupied campus to provide fun recreational opportunities for students, staff and the local community.
The bright and spacious building was completed in two phases, firstly shell construction followed by the fit out including specialist and bespoke items providing:
- a 100-station fitness suite
- four-court gymnasium
- four-court sports hall with viewing gallery for basketball, netball, badminton, five-a-side football and general sports use
- squash court
- 25-metre swimming pool
- aerobics and dance studio
- health suite with sauna and steam rooms
- changing facilities
- sports therapy clinic
- café and lounge area
- plant room.
Facilities externally include six grass rugby and football pitches; three floodlit 3G 6-a-side courts; floodlit 3G astroturf rugby football and hockey pitches; 8-lane athletics track and a 2.5km fitness conditioning trail.
New ecological features and wildlife habitats were created, including mixed-woodland areas and footpaths linking to Ruff Wood, wildflower meadows, open grassland and a new wildlife pond. The complex is fully accessible to wheelchair users and is utilised by the University and local community.
Collaboration with Sport England throughout the project was key to ensure regulations were adhered to and the sizes of the courts and pitches complied with the required specifications.
