Student Hub

Edge Hill University

The Student Hub, at the heart of the University campus, delivers a variety of social learning, cafeteria and retail spaces effectively creating a one stop shop for students as well as benefiting the local community.

Designed to achieve BREEAM Excellent and be both functional and inspirational with glass walls and elliptical in shape, the double height open spaces and roof lights fill the building with natural light and ambience, highlighting features of the original building where old and new meet.

The two storey innovative and sustainable Student Hub, completed on an occupied and busy campus, incorporated an original 1930s building as well as accommodating reception areas, offices, retail spaces, cafe and a restaurant. A variety of learning and media facilities including computers, internet access and large tv screens are provided and the Students’ Union, student support services and dedicated spaces for societies/groups are located on the first floor.

The project achieved 36 out of 40 on two separate visits from Considerate Constructors.

The Student Hub is thermally efficient and promotes natural light and ventilation. Energy is recycled, for example from cooking areas it is reused throughout the building. New kitchen equipment is utilised with induction powered cookers to reduce carbon emissions.
