John Turner Construction has been awarded the design and build of an independent special school in Bolton.
The new school building will be an addition to the existing Birtenshaw School in Bromley Cross and will provide an additional 72 places for children with special educational needs and disability (SEND).
The new 4148m2 building will incorporate:
- 10 classroom suites
- therapy accommodation
- staff facilities
- dining and sports hall
- a 20 metre hydrotherapy pool including changing facilities
- a dedicated rebound therapy room with a sunken trampoline
- a sensory integration room
- soft play areas
- a multi-sensory sound and light room with immersive technology.
A sensory courtyard garden in the centre of the building will bring the outside in and create spaces for calming and creativity with a woodland garden and arrival courtyard to welcome children and visitors.
The Birtenshaw Group has provided a unique range of services for children and young adults with special educational needs and disability for almost 65 years. Their vision is to ‘Transform Lives’, the lives of young people in Bolton, across the North West and beyond.
The group currently operates two special schools in Bolton and Merseyside, an independent specialist college for 18-25 year olds in Bolton, several children’s homes, a number of adult supported tenancies, an enrichment service, a sport and activity centre plus a variety of complementary therapies.
