Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service
John Turner Construction completed the design and build of a new ‘award winning’ city centre fire and ambulance station for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service and North West Ambulance Service at Lancaster.
Maintaining full operational capability, the first phase involved refurbishment of an adjoining vacant former three storey council office to provide recreation, sleeping, dining and admin spaces.
Demolition of the existing 1973 redundant fire station and buildings kicked off the second phase followed by construction of the new fire station including a glazed link to connect the new and old structures for Lancaster’s fire fighters, fire engines, ambulances and paramedics.
Located in a conservation area and surrounded by listed buildings, the new stone-clad facility incorporates two appliance bays; two storey in height to accommodate the emergency vehicles.
The appliance bays feature a mezzanine floor with a gym and plant room at first floor level. Seven canopied ambulance-parking bays with two rapid response vehicle spaces are located at the rear of the site along with space for the North West Blood Bikes team.
Opened by HRH Princess Alexandra, the multi-phased project provides a new watch tower, a car park with a high perimeter stone wall along with community facilities.
The joint emergency services facility received a Lancaster & District Design Award recognising the design and appearance of the building, which enhances the built environment.
