The scheme was commissioned by Nautilus International, the trade union and professional organisation representing maritime professionals worldwide.
Situated within the historic Mariners’ Park estate in Wallasey, the development brings together Nautilus International’s union and welfare services under one roof for the first time. The project’s vision was to foster stronger connections between the charity and union while providing a modern, supportive environment for retired mariners.
The three/four-storey building comprises 27 spacious two-bedroom apartments, each with a balcony and attractive views across landscaped gardens or the River Mersey. Designed to the highest accessibility standards, the apartments offer flexibility for residents with differing mobility needs. Communal facilities, including a welcoming reception area, shared library, coffee space and archive store, promote interaction between residents, staff and the wider Mariners’ Park community.
At the top of the building, John Turner Construction delivered a contemporary, open-plan office featuring a terrace overlooking the Mersey Estuary and Liverpool’s iconic skyline. This new head office provides Nautilus International with a flexible, collaborative workspace that enhances operational efficiency and encourages closer working relationships between its teams.
Energy efficiency and sustainability were key considerations throughout construction, with careful attention paid to orientation, insulation and material selection to minimise environmental impact and reduce long-term operational costs.
The completed building, officially opened by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal in April 2025, represents a multi-million-pound investment in the UK’s maritime community. John Turner Construction successfully delivered this prestigious project, carefully managing the technical and logistical challenges of building within a live residential environment.
