Printworks, Manchester

DTZ Investors

Originally built in 1873 as a major printing and publishing house for newspapers, the Printworks played a key role in Manchester’s industrial past. After closing in the late 1980s, it was transformed into a leisure and entertainment complex, reopening in 2000 as part of the city’s broader regeneration. Over the next two decades, the Printworks became a popular destination for dining, entertainment and social activities. However, with evolving technology and changing consumer expectations, a significant upgrade was needed to keep the venue competitive.

Today, the Printworks is home to bars, restaurants, retail outlets, a gym and a cinema. John Turner Construction was awarded the contract to refurbish and modernise this historic venue while ensuring it remained fully operational throughout the project.

The centrepiece of the refurbishment was the installation of Europe’s largest digital ceiling screen, spanning 1,000m² above the internal street. This innovative feature has transformed the complex into a visually stunning environment, with dynamic audio-visual displays creating immersive experiences for visitors. The digital ceiling integrates with the complex’s audio, lighting and fire systems, allowing for real-time content and seamless operation. Additionally, new LED ribbon screens were installed on the external façade and an interactive gaming screen was added to further enhance the visitor experience.

In conjunction with these digital upgrades, we replaced the old cobbled flooring with modern paving, improved the entrances with cladded structural steelwork, light boxes and new signage. The building’s heritage façade was also restored and enhanced, blending its rich history with modern functionality.

Maintaining public access and business continuity was a key challenge. With three entrances open at all times, we implemented a phased approach for the mall works, ensuring safe public access while minimising disruption. The installation of the digital ceiling screen required a bespoke 20m high scaffold platform and careful co-ordination to ensure the project proceeded smoothly without interrupting the centre’s daily activities.

The installation of the digital ceiling has redefined the Printworks as a cutting-edge entertainment destination, seamlessly blending modern technology with its historic architecture. The refurbishment has enhanced both the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the complex, attracting more visitors and elevating the experience for tenants and patrons.
