Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust
John Turner Construction has successfully delivered the transformation of three Section 136 suites across Greater Manchester for the Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust, as part of a major investment in Health-Based Places of Safety (HBPoS). These essential facilities provide a safe and secure environment where individuals detained under the Mental Health Act can be assessed and supported with dignity and care.
The programme included significant upgrades to existing suites at Fairfield General Hospital in Bury, Tameside General Hospital in Ashton-under-Lyne and Parklands Hospital in Oldham. At Tameside, the works also involved the creation of a brand-new, purpose-built suite.
Each facility has been designed to offer a welcoming, calming space for individuals in crisis. The use of natural light, nature-inspired artwork and soft, considered colour palettes all contribute to an atmosphere of serenity. Outdoor garden areas offer secure access to fresh air, an important feature to help reduce stress and support emotional regulation during what can be a distressing time.
Robust safety measures have been carefully integrated into the suites, with discreet monitoring systems and secure layouts ensuring both patient and staff wellbeing. These works were undertaken in live environments and in collaboration with Greater Manchester Police, North West Ambulance Services and local authority partners.
The completion of all three phases represents a significant step forward in the delivery of responsive, compassionate mental health care environments across the region.
