Blackpool Victoria Hospital
John Turner Construction has recently completed the construction of a new laundry building at the Blackpool Victoria Hospital. This new building replaces an outdated RAAC-constructed facility with a modern, sustainable structure designed to improve staff well-being and boost operational efficiency.
Located on the hospital campus, the new laundry building integrates seamlessly into the existing infrastructure, reflecting the hospital’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
Central to the building’s design is the separation of clean and dirty linens, alongside state-of-the-art storage for medical records. The facility also includes dedicated staff amenities, such as bright and airy rest areas, modern changing rooms and secure storage, all aimed at improving morale and productivity.
Sustainability was a key focus of the project, with the building featuring a 200kWp solar photovoltaic (PV) system, air-source heat pumps, and energy-efficient lighting. These measures reduce energy consumption by 25% and support the hospital’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions.
The project faced several challenges, including adverse weather conditions, the need to relocate existing services and working on a busy hospital campus. Through close collaboration between hospital administration, our construction team and the design team, the project was completed on time and within budget.
The new laundry facility not only meets the hospital’s current operational needs but also sets a new standard for sustainable healthcare infrastructure. This project serves as a benchmark for future developments, demonstrating how functionality, sustainability, and staff well-being can be effectively integrated into a healthcare facility.
