The University of Manchester recently hosted its Outstanding Contribution Awards ceremony, where John Turner Construction proudly received the Environmental Sustainability Award for our Ewings student accommodation refurbishment project at the Dalton Ellis campus.
This ground-breaking decarbonisation project involved the extensive refurbishment of the Ewings and Graham buildings situated within a Conservation Area. The buildings were taken back to shell and remodelled, with all the building services being replaced.
Aligned with the University’s goal to achieve net zero emissions by 2038, we replaced the gas-fired heating systems with electric power and connected to the university’s offsite renewable photovoltaic energy farms. Additionally, we incorporated solar thermal heating and air source heat pumps into the scheme. To enhance energy efficiency, the buildings were externally super insulated and all windows and doors were replaced with triple-glazed units. Throughout the project, we carefully worked around existing mature trees, replacing roof coverings without disturbing the natural surroundings.
Our Site Manager, Rob Burton, was honoured to accept the award on behalf of our construction team, supply chain partners and the design team. Symbolising commitment to sustainability, the award itself was crafted from a fallen tree on the campus, meticulously planed, engraved and stained by a local wood carver.
