John Turner Construction has been appointed by the Greater Manchester Academies Trust to deliver the next phase of development at Manchester Communication Academy, located in Harpurhey, Manchester.
This important expansion project supports Manchester City Council’s strategic plan to meet the growing demand for secondary school places in the area, driven by increased local development and population growth.
Manchester Communication Academy is a mixed, secondary comprehensive for pupils aged 11 to 16, with a current roll of 1,264 students. The school, which opened in 2010, specialises in communication-based subjects including drama, media, ICT, languages and presentation skills. As part of its ongoing development, the school aims to increase capacity to 1,500 pupils by admitting 300 students per year.
To facilitate this growth, John Turner Construction will deliver two new-build blocks totalling 3,155 sqm. The first will be a purpose-built Year 7 Transition Centre, offering dedicated classrooms and support spaces tailored to pupils beginning their secondary education. The second will be a new science block, comprising 11 modern laboratories and ancillary teaching areas.
In addition, two new multi-use games areas (MUGAs) and an associated playground for recreational use will be created, further enhancing the school’s outdoor provision. The development places strong emphasis on sustainable design, ensuring longevity and energy efficiency across all new facilities.
John Turner Construction is proud to be playing a key role in the continued growth of Manchester Communication Academy and supporting the Greater Manchester Academies Trust in meeting the future educational needs of the local community.
