Stopford Building refurbishment projects

John Turner Construction is pleased to be delivering two significant refurbishment projects at The University of Manchester’s Stopford Building, following our appointment under the University’s Construction Works Framework.

Located on Oxford Road, the Stopford Building is the second largest on campus and home to the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health. Originally constructed between 1969 and 1972, the building supports both student education and research in the medical and life sciences.

Our first project, now on site, involves the full refurbishment of the Pharmaceutical Teaching Laboratories and Professional Skills Suite on the ground floor. This complex scheme includes a full strip-out back to the structural frame, asbestos removal and the installation of new mechanical and electrical services. Key features include 20 new fume cupboards, integrated panel systems, specialist flooring, new ceilings and the construction of a new cold room.

The works are being delivered within a live university environment during the busy exam period, requiring close co-ordination with University stakeholders. A flexible working schedule has been adopted to mitigate disruption, with careful management of noise and timing of high-impact operations to minimise any effect on students and staff.

The second scheme – due to commence shortly – focuses on the third-floor refurbishment of the Stopford Library. This project will create a unified student hub space by reconfiguring the current layout to support co-located study, social and student support functions, in line with the University’s Student Experience Programme. Scope of works includes the creation of a new, larger reception desk, improved study and social areas and the reintroduction of 15 previously blocked windows to enhance natural light. Upgrades will also include new energy-efficient lighting, acoustic ceiling baffles and enhanced finishes throughout.

Both projects demand a high level of co-ordination and care, demonstrating John Turner Construction’s experience in delivering complex refurbishments in live, educational environments.
